About This Book

These stories show that a society can steer its people on to questionable paths. But some refuse to bow down despite wanting in power. They stand by the choices that make them who they are. At times, it means they lose the battle. But sometimes, they succeed.

About The Author

THE WRITER Subhadra Kumari Chauhan (1904-1948), known for the immortal lines ‘Khoob ladi mardaani, woh toh Jhaansiwaali rani thi’, published her first poem at the age of nine. Later in life, responding to the literary milieu of the time, she also began writing short stories and published several collections. THE TRANSLATOR Sakshi Agarwal is a book editor and literary translator. She has translated a variety of forms—including the short story ‘Prayishchit’ in ‘Cat People’ (Simon and Schuster, 2021), and ‘Muktidham’ in ‘Abhishek Majumdar: Collected Plays’ (Methuen, 2024). A novel is next on her list.
